Initial Discussions
Initial discussions about what would eventually become the primary mission of the new
company began in the Fall of 2004. However, as is often the case, forming a new company
was not the focus of these conversations. The main topic was
the general frustration over the slow adoption of Open Source software by
the business community.
The participants all had extensive experience with Open Source software,
they knew the value, and they understood the benefits that could be gained from its use.
Yet everyone recognized that adoption of the Open Source paradigm had been extremely slow.
During these interactions it became clear that a contributing factor to
the slow adoption rate was the lack of technical
support for implementing Open Source software outside of the technical community.
Even the best software is worthless if you are unable to use it. Software alone
is not a solution, the software must be tailored, implemented, and maintained to
address a business need to become part of a solution.
Enabling Event
The idea of a company geared toward facilitating the implementation of technical
web solutions using Open Source materials might never have evolved without a
significant event which occurred in December of 2004. New opportunities are often the
result of these types of unexpected events. The trigger that advanced the idea
of establishing a new company was the "reduction in force" that occurred at a large technology
company just before the Christmas holiday.
Suddenly, there was ample time for the company founders to seriously consider the
formation of a new venture.
Vision Refined
During the Spring of 2005 there was a tremendous amount of research done to determine
the feasibility of forming a company to enable our vision. It quickly became
apparent that a narrowly focused company would never survive. Accordingly,
significant effort went into identifying additional products and services that
could be aggregated into the company's portfolio. It was decided that the initial
concept for the company was sound and that a broader service definition was all that
was required. Accordingly, the vision for the company was expanded from facilitating
the adoption of Open Source materials to one which encompassed enabling technical
solutions in all areas of web technology. This would include not only Open Source
applications but also eCommerce, bill presentment, and payment processing along with multimedia
implementations. It was also decided that the company should develop a significant
presence in the Open Source development community.
Company Formation
The idea of a new company became a reality on June 1, 2005. On that date
Key Focus Media, LLC was registered as a Limited Liability Company in the
state of Arkansas. Key Focus Media, LLC was founded on the principle that
outstanding technical solutions are available to everyone at an affordable price
if the technical expertise is available to leverage existing capabilities.
Key Focus Media, LLC was formed to provide that expertise.
Expanding Horizions
After several years of doing business in Arkansas it was time to expand our
operations and take advantage of new opportunities. In the summer of 2008,
the principle operations of Key Focus Media were relocated to the Austin
Texas metropolitan area. Although we continue to support clients in our
original location, we believe the opportunities available in the larger
market will allow Key Focus Media to continue to grow. We are all
excited about our new location and are committed to continuing our
history of providing outstanding technical solutions to our clients.
